The XXIV World Congress of Philosophy

The World Congress of Philosophy is organized every five years by the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP) in collaboration with one of its member societies. The XXIV World Congress will be held in Beijing, China, from August 13 to August 20, 2018, under the auspices of the Chinese Organizing Committee. The complementary aims of the 2018 Congress include an emphasis on exploring dimensions of the human and inquiring into the challenges facing humanity: To globalize philosophical investigations to encompass the diverse forms of philosophizing by past and present thinkers across cultures, with special attention to critical reflections on philosophy itself and the tasks and functions of philosophy in the contemporary world. We cordially invite you to participate in the World Congress of Philosophy on the topic: ''The Philosophy of Aristotle'' The Congress is organized on the occasion of 2400 years since the birth of Aristotle by The International Association of Greek Philosophy, The Greek Philosophical Society and the Philosophical Society of Cyprus, under the Auspices of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP). The Congress will be taking place in Athens, where Aristotle lived most of his life. He studied and taught at Plato’s Academy for nearly 20 years and later he founded the Lyceum where he taught and composed many of his great works. Recent archaeological surveys and excavations have brought to light the Lyceum – the site which will be the heart and inspiration for the Congress. Parmenides

Parmenides was a Greek philosopher and poet, born of an illustrious family about B.C.E. 510, at Elea in Lower Italy, and is is the chief representative of the Eleatic philosophy. He was held in high esteem by his fellow-citizens for his excellent legislation, to which they ascribed the prosperity and wealth of the town. He was also admired for his exemplary life. A "Parmenidean life" was proverbial among the Greeks. He is commonly represented as a disciple of Xenophanes. Parmenides wrote after Heraclitus, and in conscious opposition to him, given the evident allusion to Hericlitus: "for whom it is and is not, the same and not the same, and all things travel in opposite directions" (fr. 6, 8). Little more is known of his biography than that he stopped at Athens on a journey in his sixty-fifth year, and there became acquainted with the youthful Socrates.
